Cold Weather Placement 

• From -4 °C to 4 °C (25 °F to 40 °F): Mortar must be maintained between 4 °C and +50 °C (40 °F and 122 °F).
• From -7 °C to -4 °C (19 °F to 25 °F): Mortar must be maintained between 4 °C and 50 °C (40 °F and 122 °F). Heat must be provided on both sides of the walls. Windbreaks must be used when wind speed exceeds 25 km/h (15.5 mph).
• -7 °C (19 °F) and below: Mortar must be maintained between 4 °C and 50 °C (40 °F and 122 °F). Enclosures and supplementary heat shall be provided to maintain an air temperature above 0 °C (32 °F).

Cold Weather Protection for Completed Masonry or Inactive Sections

• From 0 °C to 4 °C (32 °F to 40 °F):  Masonry shall be protected from rain or snow for 48 hours.
• From -4 °C to 0 °C (25 °F to 32 °F): Masonry should be completely covered for 48 hours.
• From -7 °C to -4 °C (19 °F to 25 °F): Masonry shall be completely covered with insulating blankets for 48 hours.
• Below -7 °C (19 °F): The masonry temperature shall be maintained above 0 °C (32 °F) for 48 hours by enclosure and supplementary heat.

Hot Weather Placement

• Cover the works with a waterproof tarpaulin to prevent them from drying too quickly. Make sure to use a tarpaulin that does not stain.
• Never wet the masonry units, unless otherwise indicated by the professional in charge of the project. 

Small batch mixing:

When mixing a partial amount, always start by dry mixing the entire contents of a 30 kg (66 lb) bag of Sable Marco® 116 Mortar in a clean container. This step ensures uniform distribution of all components. Once thoroughly blended, measure out the required quantity of dry mortar and add clean, potable water only to the portion being used. This method helps maintain consistent properties in the final mix.

Large batch mixing:

Always mix the full content of the bag to ensure product consistency and optimal performance. In a clean mortar mixer, begin by pouring approximately 4.5 L (1.2 US gal) of clean, potable water. Gradually add the full 30 kg (66 lb) of Sable Marco® 116 Mortar while mixing. Mix for three (3) to five (5) minutes. Allow the mortar to stand for a short period of time, then, if necessary, adjust the consistency with up to an additional 0.5 L (0.13 US gal) of water. Do not exceed a total of 5 L (1.3 US gal) of water per 30 kg (66 lb) bag.

Note:

Once the desired consistency is achieved, do not retemper the mix or add water to compensate for evaporation. Do not introduce any admixtures or accelerators on site unless specifically authorized by the manufacturer.

The application of Sable Marco® 116 Mortar must comply with the requirements of Sections 6 and 7 of CSA-A371.

If the ambiant temperature is 25 °C (77 °F) or above, the mortar should be placed within 1 ½ hours of mixing. 

If the ambiant temperature is 25 °C (77 °F) or below, the mortar should be placed within 2 ½ hours of mixing. 

Mortar not used after these periods of time should be discarded.

Finishing:

To enhance both the appearance and weather resistance of the masonry system, all joints must be compacted and smoothed using a suitable jointer. This process ensures proper consolidation of the mortar and helps seal the joint against moisture penetration.

Finishing must be done by compaction once the mortar has hardened sufficiently to retain a finger mark. Unless otherwise specified, a concave joint profile is recommended for optimal durability and water resistance.

Clean all tools and equipment immediately after use with water. Once hardened, material can only be removed mechanically.

To minimize the need for chemical cleaners, remove mortar splashes and stains before the material hardens, using water and a soft material such as burlap or wood.

If chemical cleaning is required, consult the product manufacturer to ensure compatibility with hydrated lime-based mortar. Always test the cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area first to confirm it does not damage the mortar.
